Lyon – CSKA Moscow

Lyon come into this second leg tie in a commanding position in their Europa League tie with CSKA Moscow. They lead the Russians 1-0 on aggregate after a second half Marcelo goal last week, and whilst they were far from scintillating in attack without the injured Nabil Fekir, they did eventually get the job done.

Fekir is still out for this match, but Lyon once again managed to secure a win without him on Sunday as they beat Caen 1-0. Admittedly it is a rather obvious downgrade in attack, but they have compensated for that by increasing their defensive rigidity. That should be enough to see them through the visit of CSKA Moscow, but they will have to improve their forward play soon if they want to progress even further in the Europa League.

CSKA Moscow did bounce back from their midweek loss with a 3-0 hammering of Akhmat Grozny on Sunday, but that will do little to allay their fears of heading out of the Europa League on Thursday. They haven’t had the best scoring record recently and are now faced with the task of travelling to Parc OL and getting a win.

To make matters worse for the visitors, Lyon have lost just twice at home in all competitions this season, winning 10, drawing six, and losing two of their 18 games at Parc OL. This includes an unbeaten record there in the Europa League, where they have won three and drew one of their four matches.

Meanwhile, CSKA Moscow have won just five of their last 12 competitive away games and have only recently returned from their long winter break. This poor run away from home does include a draw against Red Star Belgrade and a trip to Old Trafford, but generally speaking their opposition has been of a lower quality than Lyon offer.

To be honest, even without Fekir Lyon they pose enough of a threat to get the win here. They haven’t lost at home in the Europa League since 2014 and have won seven of the eight matches they have played in,in the competition in the last year or so. CSKA Moscow may have held their own for large periods of the first leg, but it’s a very different story outside of Russia and backing a Lyon Win along with a 2-0 correct score predictions looks to be the best option here.
