The highlight of this weekend’s Scottish football is unquestionably the Old Firm clash on Sunday. There’s some rare talk in Scotland at the minute, with some suggesting that the Premiership is a Rangers win away from a title race, which isn’t something we expected from this campaign. While Celtic have been impressive this term, the Gers could be within three point of them with a victory at Ibrox on Sunday. The hosts have got in to that position with some great form, so can they record another win and close in on top spot?
These two have hardly been closer heading in to an Old Firm clash in recent years, and they’re preparing for another huge game next month in the Scottish Cup semi-finals. That gives the Gers two big chances to dent Celtic’s treble hopes, with the champions aiming to record back to back domestic trebles under Brendan Rodgers. Can they extend their lead at the top when they head to Ibrox?
The worry for the visitors is that Rangers have built up plenty of momentum. The hosts have won nine of their last 10 to kick start a late charge for the title, having looked set for a third place finish not too long ago. The Gers also have some brilliant scoring form backing them up, as they look to follow up the eight goals they’ve scored across their last two games. Graeme Murty has seen his team hit 21 goals in five matches, and they’re likely to find the net in Sunday’s big encounter.
The Gers have found the net in 86% of their league games this season, while they’ve scored in seven straight home Premiership matches. While Celtic are also looking strong coming in to Sunday’s game, the visitors have had a few issues through recent away trips. There was obviously the Bhoys’ 3-0 defeat at Zenit, which sent them out of the Europa League. However, the visitors have two clean sheets in their last eight across all competitions. That’s not exactly a defence which is ready to shut-out the in form hosts.
With Celtic averaging two goals per game in the league this term, we expect the visitors to score in this clash. Both teams to score looks like great value given how good they’ve both been going forward, so that’s our main tip here. On top of that, the away side’s high scoring ways should see plenty of joy for forward Moussa Dembele, who seems to finally be back in form after three goals in his last two. We’re backing the Frenchman to add to the two goals he’s already scored at Ibrox, having hit five goals in seven starts against the Gers. That makes Dembele our anytime scorer pick for this weekend’s clash.
Head To Head
Celtic have won four and drawn two of their last six meetings with Rangers.
