Following the tragic news of Davide Astori’s passing, this weekend is going to be incredibly tough for Fiorentina. While their game with Udinese was called off last weekend, they now return to the pitch in Sunday’s meeting with Benevento, which will see an incredibly emotional afternoon at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. The hosts will be aiming to pay tribute to their captain in their return to Serie A action, but will the weight of the occasion be too much for them in their encounter with the bottom side?
With recent events in mind, the result is second in importance to Fiorentina this weekend. However, they’re still going to want to commemorate Astori with a win on Sunday, as they’ll have to focus on the game once the whistle goes. We do think the hosts will build on the outpouring of emotion that we’re likely to see across Serie A this weekend, as the league comes to terms with the loss of a player who certainly left his mark across the club game and as an Italian international.
It’s not likely to be an easy atmosphere for Benevento, although they’ve had trouble regardless of which ground they’ve played at this season. The visitors are bottom, 13 points shy of safety after a poor season. The Witches of the South have lost 22 of 26 Serie A games so far, and they’ve suffered a defeat in all 13 of their away matches in the league this season. The way they’re playing, it seems like they could go the whole campaign without securing even a point on their travels.
We can’t see this being the weekend where Benevento get off the mark away from home, and we can see this being another tough trip for the bottom club. They’ve picked up just four points from 15 meetings with top half sides this term, and heading to la Viola is likely to result in another loss for the team who are in pole position to return to Serie B.
The away side have lost to nil in 69% of their away games, and they hold the lowest number of away goals across Europe’s big five leagues. We’ve seen plenty of poor displays from this Benevento strikeforce – especially on the road – so we’re not expecting the visitors to get a goal on Sunday. We’re backing another defeat to nil for Benevento, seeing as Fiorentina won the reverse fixture 3-0 when the two met back in October.
Head To Head
This will be just the second match between these two teams, with Fiorentina winning the other encounter 3-0.
