Back to back defeats have knocked Aberdeen out of the top two, and they now trail Rangers by three points. Their loss to Celtic on Sunday wasn’t a shock, but if their poor run continues with a loss at Motherwell this weekend then the Dons will be in trouble. Can they avoid any kind of upset in their midweek trip to Fir Park, or will ‘Well pick up their fourth win in five matches?
The visitors are slowly coming back in to form, and they’ll be looking to carry that in to their weekend meeting with Hearts in the Scottish Cup. The hosts have already made a couple of trips to Hampden this term, and now they’re 90 minutes away from another. That has to be a boost for them, given that their best form this term has come alongside progression in the cup. In between losing the League Cup final and their opening Scottish Cup victory of the season, the home side saw their form dip significantly.
One thing which has stayed pretty constant this term is Motherwell’s good defensive record, which will be put to the test on Wednesday. The hosts have conceded just 0.86 goals per game at their own ground so far, one of the lowest home totals of any side in the division. That’s led to plenty of low scoring games at Fir Park, with 71% of Motherwell’s league outings at this ground seeing fewer than three goals scored.
While Aberdeen have a solid scoring record away, they have drawn a blank three times in their last four on the road. Since November, they’ve failed to score at Rangers twice, along with recently failing to score at Celtic and Hibs. Motherwell’s defensive record at home is better than almost all of those sides – bar the champions – so the visitors are bound to have a tough time finding the back of the net here.
It’s rare for these two to see both teams scoring this term, with 57% of Motherwell’s home matches finishing with a clean sheet. Both teams have scored in 39% of Aberdeen’s Premiership matches, while the visitors have failed to score in back to back league games. Given that the home side have seen under 2.5 goals in all but one of their last 10 matches at Fir Park, we think under 2.5 goals is the best bet for this clash.
Head To Head
Aberdeen have won four of their last six meetings with Motherwell.
