Having progressed in the Europa League, despite losing Thursday’s second-leg in Portugal, Marseille should come into this fixture full of confidence. Domestically, their form has been pleasing, as they’re undefeated in 2018. Beating Bordeaux last weekend, keeping a clean sheet in the process, was good preparation for this fixture, though beating PSG on their own patch will be anything but simple.
After a disappointing trip to the Bernabéu, PSG bounced back in emphatic fashion last weekend, as they defeated Strasbourg by five goals to two. Once again, Unai Emery’s side flexed their attacking muscles in Ligue 1. Even against a Marseille side who’re strong, the hosts will be expecting to win with a degree of comfort.
From a betting point of view, though the hosts are impossible to oppose, they’re simply not worth backing at the prices. The bet that does stand out is ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’. Both PSG and Marseille tend to favour high intensity, attacking contests, so the goals should flow at Parc des Princes on Sunday night.
As has been mentioned on several occasions throughout the course of the season, PSG really are a cut above in terms of attacking quality. Emery has a tremendous amount of firepower at his disposal, so it really is no surprise that the Parisians have scored a staggering 83 goals in just 26 matches. On average, France’s premier club have notched 3.12 goals per game. Such a stat really is remarkable. Consider this in conjunction with the fact that Marseille have let things slip somewhat defensively and it’s easy to see the imperious hosting flourishing once again in the final third.
However, where they may not get things all their own way is in the defensive third. For all they do continue to cause teams all manner of problems going forward, Emery’s men have looked a tad vulnerable at the back, especially on the break. Last weekend’s match against Strasbourg, who scored not once but twice against PSG, was a perfect example of this. Strasbourg found themselves being afforded lots of space in behind and they made the most of it. Given Marseille’s scoring habits this season, it’s easy to see the hosts faltering defensively.
Having seen just how easy Strasbourg managed to break on PSG last weekend, Marseille’s front-line should be looking forward to this fixture. The visitors, who’ve scored in all but one of their away matches this season, know that they will have to face a barrage of PSG attacks, and they’re unlikely to remain solid at the back, but they can certainly get competitive in the final third, just as they did when the two met earlier in the campaign.
In a match where PSG’s attacking intent is likely to make for an open encounter, both teams can profit by finding the net in what should ultimately be a high-scoring affair.
Head To Head
PSG have tended to come out on top in this fixture, though they did fail to win earlier in the season, as the pair drew 2-2 at Orange Vélodrome.
