Both Strasbourg and Montpellier are in patchy form going into this Friday night’s Ligue 1 game, with only eight points separating the two teams. With much of the division tight, Strasbourg are only seven places below their opponents, but anything above the relegation zone will qualify as a success for the newly promoted team.
At present Strasbourg have done the best out of the three teams who came up from Ligue 2 last summer. In front of goal they have done well, with 32 goals scored, even though there isn’t a prolific striker within their ranks. Indeed, no-one in the squad has managed to find the net more than five times, but it is the defensive side of the team that has caused some alarm, with a huge 47 conceded in just 26 matches to date. The gap between themselves and the bottom three is now four points, a sizeable advantage at this stage of the campaign, but they will need at least another four wins to be completely sure of playing top-flight football next season.
Montpellier meanwhile have confounded expectations to stay in the top eight for most of the campaign, despite selling star striker Steve Mounie to Huddersfield Town of the Premier League in the summer. Their form has been patchy at best in recent weeks however with only two wins in their last six. In fairness, two of those games were against table toppers PSG and current champions Monaco.
What is all the more remarkable is that Montpellier have been able to stay so high in the division, despite scoring only 24 goals. They do remain the league’s draw specialists however and have conceded just 21 times, giving them the second best defensive record in the division.
We think this will be a close game and advise backing a Both Teams To Score bet.
For our correct score prediction meanwhile, we think that the game will finish 2-1 to Montpellier.
