This has been a poor season so far for both Depor and Espanyol and neither side will exactly approach this game in the best of spirits. Both sides head into it sat in the bottom five of La Liga but with a 10 point advantage on their opponents, Espanyol can be much more content with life right now and even though they are 16th, they don’t really look like they are in immediate relegation danger.
Defeat here would change that slightly but in truth it looks like a four-way battle for 17th place at the bottom, with everyone below Espanyol looking desperately poor. Depor certainly fall into that category and it has been a nightmare start for Clarence Seedorf, who has lost both games 1-0, having been appointed earlier in the month.
Those were on paper winnable matches and he simply can’t afford to see another winnable game slide away without putting some points on the board. With no wins in 9 heading into this though, it’s hard to feel confident about backing Depor to claim all three points here.
Espanyol haven’t been a great deal better but they do at least have a degree of organisation and defensive solidity, something that is certainly lacking in the Depor camp. The Barcelona club come into this one without a win in six matches but on the back of three straight draws which has allowed them to keep their points tally ticking over.
All of their last four games have seen both teams score and they do at least have a reliable striker in the shape of Gerard Moreno. He has reached double figures for the second season running in La Liga. Iago Aspas is the only Spaniard to have scored more goals than him this season, which has led to suggestions Moreno could be a dark-horse for a place in the Spain World Cup squad.
For a struggling side, Depor also have two very capable forwards in the shape of former Arsenal man Lucas Perez and Romanian international Florin Andone. The Galicians have netted in 75% of their home games this term but defensive problems have ensured they’ve only taken 0.92 points per game at the Riazor, the league’s second worst home record.
58% of their home matches have seen both teams score while 55% of Espanyol away games have done likewise. With Depor certainly targeting and needing maximum points here, it should be relatively open again and backing Both Teams to Score looks a decent bet.
Head To Head
Espanyol have taken 10 points from the last 4 league meetings. However they have still lost on 3 of their last 5 trips to the Riazor overall.
