Two of the Bundesliga’s most multicultural teams meet in the first Monday fixture since May 2016, as Eintracht Frankfurt host RB Leipzig for a top four clash. For the hosts, a 3-0 defeat in Augsburg proved nothing more than a blip as last weekend saw them return to winning ways in resounding fashion against Cologne (a 4-2 win). The Eagles are flying high in fourth prior to the beginning of the weekend and boss Niko Kovac will no doubt be eager to measure his side against a team already proving themselves in Europe.
RB Leipzig head to Frankfurt off the back of an historic European night, having beaten Serie A leaders Napoli 3-1 on Thursday. Head coach Ralph Hassenhüttl will likely avoid making many changes to his winning team, despite the intensity of the game and hard work his players put in. One change could see Bernardo return on either side of the defense though, with raw fitness the only question mark over players in the Leipzig line-up. The Red Bulls should also be boosted by the return of Emil Forsberg, who is vying for a start at the Commerzbank Arena on Monday.
Eintracht Frankfurt have faced RB Leipzig at home just one time before, and that was a 2-2 draw in the Red Bulls’ maiden top flight season, where they finished 2nd. Frankfurt were not quite in the same form then as they are now, and with the home advantage proving vital back then, there’s certainly an argument for backing the in-form Frankfurt ‘draw no bet’ for this fixture. While both sides have near fully fit squads, it’s Frankfurt boss Niko Kovac who has had those extra days to prepare, and more importantly, whose players have had that crucial extra time to rest. Eintracht’s Sebastien Haller should return in attack too, and the summer-signed Frenchman trails just two goals behind Leipzig’s own prodigal forward Timo Werner.
With two profound forwards going head to head, it would be no surprise for either or both to get on the score-sheet here. With three wins from their last four in the Bundesliga though, Frankfurt are looking the more in-form side here, especially when seeing that they’ve taken results against sides of a similar ability to RB Leipzig at home in recent weeks – for example, the 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach or the 2-2 draw to Schalke. Leipzig do head into this off the back of two league wins for the first time since October, but they’ve only won back to back away matches once since November 2016, and their recent away form (W1 D2 L3) doesn’t indicate that there’s a huge danger of this repeating again here. Our prediction: a 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt win.
Head To Head
RB Leipzig won 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt when the two sides last met in September. RB Leipzig have never lost to Frankfurt (W2 D1).
