Wigan – Blackpool

18th November 2017 was the last time that the current League One leaders were beaten and it looked as though their unbeaten run may go on for weeks to come; however, Paul Cook’s title hopefuls tasted their first defeat of 2018 when losing 3-1 away to Southend last weekend. After such a disappointing result, the Latics will be hoping to bounce back when they return to home soil on Tuesday night.

Having seen Southend do a job on Wigan at the weekend, Blackpool may be eying up a big result here, though they’ll need to pull out more than they have done in recent weeks if they’re to beat a home side who’re likely to be extra determined. The visitors come into this match without a win in five, while they’ve won just one of their last 14 in the league.

Against a Blackpool side who’ve found it tough to win matches of late, Wigan ought to fancy their chances of bouncing back in this fixture, though their task might not be as straightforward as their odds suggest. Blackpool, for all they have struggled to get their heads, in front have often defended well. If the visitors come to frustrate, which is more than likely, Wigan might not run away with this one as many people may be expecting.

The bet that stands out is ‘Wigan to Win & Under 2.5 Goals’. Wigan do have it within them to blow team away, but they’ve not done that all that often at home this season, while we’ve seen teams come to the DW and frustrate for long periods on more than one occasion. Shrewsbury, Charlton and Peterborough have all shut Wigan out on their own patch of late, while it’s now five matches since Wigan scored more than two goals on home soil.

The hosts do have lots of quality, which means teams do eventually buckle, but Blackpool could very easily keep it respectable on Tuesday night. Going forward, the visitors are expected to struggle. Bowyer’s men come into this fixture having scored just three goals in their last five matches. Against a Wigan team who’ve been breached in just 20% of their home games, it’s easy to see the visitors faltering in the final third once again.

As mentioned above, Blackpool could thrive defensively. They’ve often kept things tight against teams who like to get on the front foot at home, as low-scoring matches against the likes of Charlton and Peterborough suggest. If they can retain discipline early doors, the visitors can make this a tough test for the hosts. What’s more Blackpool have also done a good job at preventing teams from bombarding their goals, as they’ve conceded the second lowest number of shots on target when playing away from home this season.

All things considered, in match where not much appeals at the prices, the hosts are fancied to edge past this Blackpool side, but those expecting fireworks may be kept waiting a while.
