Red Star Belgrade – CSKA Moscow

It’s been a long time since Red Star Belgrade made a knockout round appearance in European football, with this Europa League success being the first time they’ve made it past the group stages since the inception of the Europa League. In fact, this season was their first group stage showing since 2007/08, so the fans in Serbia will be very pleased with their team.

This match on Tuesday represents a return to competitive action for the hosts after their lengthy winter break, although a number of friendlies have been played during this period. These friendlies haven’t gone particularly well, but in competitive football they are unbeaten in 14 matches and even held Arsenal to a goalless draw at The Emirates in November.

This excellent form saw them finish 2nd in their Europa League group, and puts them well in the lead in the Serbian Super Liga. They have a nine point advantage over Partizan Belgrade, leaving them free to fully focus on the Europa League.

CSKA Moscow will be tough opponents though. The Russians finished 3rd in their Champions League group at the end of 2017, marking a solid improvement from their four consecutive bottom placed finishes in the Champions League group stages. The last time they made it to the knockout stages in Europe was a 2011/12 showing in the Champions League last 16, so just like their opponents they will be very pleased with their performance.

Also like Red Star Belgrade, they are returning to competitive action after a winter break. Unlike the hosts they lost their last two competitive outings though, with Manchester United and Spartak Moscow both beating them.

We’re not expecting a particularly entertaining match here though. Red Star Belgrade saw a total of five goals in their six Europa League group stages, with every one of them having fewer than three goals. Meanwhile, CSKA Moscow have only seen three or more goals in four of their last ten European outings. This makes an Under 2.5 Goals prediction look the best value bet, so we’re going for that along with a 1-1 correct score predictions.
